POV | Police shooting was justified

Posted: Updated:
In several American cities recently, police officers have come under heavy criticism after shootings resulting in the deaths of black citizens. In my view, many of those incidents were justified, while in others the officers involved probably did cross the line.

The shooting of an African man by the police here in Louisville this Saturday -- while certainly regrettable -- appears to me to fall clearly into the “justified” category.

Luckily, in this instance, we have clear video documentation of the incident. And it provides substantial proof that the LMPD officer involved did not shoot until he had been rushed by the suspect and swung at with what could be considered a deadly weapon. Given those circumstances, I believe the officer had no choice but to use his weapon.

Those who claim the officer could have used other means to subdue the suspect ignore the fact that, as Louisville Police Chief Steve Conrad pointed out, “with this situation happening very, very, quickly…he didn't have the opportunity to transition to another option.”

If you watch the video, I think you'll agree.

Incidents like these are always tragic, and I'm sure the officer involved wishes this one had never happened. But while there will surely be a lot of debate over this, if the public gives the evidence fair consideration, they should stand with the cops on this one.

Call and share your thoughts.
