LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A local organization says it hopes to bring more awareness to sickle cell anemia.

The Sickle Cell Association of Kentuckiana distributed information about the disease in front of City Hall Tuesday.

More than 1,000 people in Kentucky have sickle cell anemia.

Experts say the disease can be debilitating and can affect patients throughout their lives.

"We provide patient services. If anyone needs health referrals, if anyone needs information about hospitals and doctors they can frequent, if anyone is needing help or financial assistance, we help to make sure we're meeting their needs in that way," said Daphne Matthews-Johnson, a spokesperson for the Sickle Cell Association of Kentuckiana.

World Sickle Cell Day will be observed worldwide on Friday.
