Nelson County authorities searching for driver who hit 2-year-old and fled the scene

NELSON COUNTY, Ky. (WDRB) -- A hit-and-run driver in Nelson County left a 2-year-old lying in the street.

The Nelson County Sheriff's Office is now trying to track down the person who was behind the wheel.

"I couldn't imagine anyone flying down this little stretch of street, knowing kids are here," Roland Oakes told WDRB News.

Oakes says he also can't imagine why someone would leave after hitting his grandson.

He says 2-year-old Ronnie is still at Kosair Children's Hospital. Family members say the accident left the little boy with a skull fracture and internal bleeding.

"He's doing a whole lot better and right now it's just a waiting moment," Oakes said.

The boy's family is also waiting for a break in the case.

We're told Ronnie was hit at around 6:40 Monday night on Dixie Lane, which is in northwest Nelson County.

Oakes says his son's family just moved into the neighborhood.

"Initially, we've been told that he was riding a scooter and that the mother had gone inside for just a second and that he'd gone out in the road," said Nelson County Sheriff Ed Mattingly.

Mattingly says people nearby heard the accident but didn't actually see anything.

"All we have is that it's possibly a dark colored car... we don't even know that really," Mattingly said,

The sheriff says there was a camera rolling at a nearby home, but they can't find the suspect's vehicle on the recording. Mattingly says his department will keep running down leads but help from the public could be the key to closing this case.

"We just hope somebody saw something," Oakes said. "They probably know who it is, or like I said, afraid to come forward, but I hope they do."

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Nelson County Sheriff's Office at (502)-348-1840.
