Two major traffic changes scheduled to start overnight Wednesday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Drivers need to prepare for two significant traffic changes in connection with the Downtown Crossing portion of the Ohio River Bridges Project.

That's according to a news release from Mindy Peterson, spokesperson for the Ohio River Bridges Downtown Crossing project.

An interstate ramp is scheduled to reopen to traffic in downtown Louisville and additional lane restrictions are planned for I-65 in southern Indiana. Work is scheduled overnight Wednesday, with the new ramp open and the lane restrictions expected to be in place by early Thursday morning.

Ramp from I-65 North to I-64 West to Reopen to Traffic
The new ramp from I-65 North to I-64 West is scheduled to open to traffic. The old ramp closed in mid-February and was demolished. Over the past four months, crews with Walsh Construction have built a new ramp to link to new overpasses. The work is part of the reconstruction of the Kennedy Interchange.

Drivers will notice two significant changes:

  • Drivers traveling from I-65 North to I-64 West will split to the right to travel on the new ramp. (Westbound traffic split to the left in the old configuration.)

  • The new on-ramp marks an earlier decision point than before. Drivers traveling to either I-64 East/I-71 North or I-64 West will split from I-65 North, where the new ramp to I-64 East/I-71 North opened last month. Drivers traveling to I-64 West will then split to the right to access the new on-ramp.

Signage will be in place, clearly marking the new ramp. The ramp, which carries around 10,000 vehicles each day, is reopening on schedule. More than 40 new ramps and overpasses are being built on the Kentucky side of the river as part of the Downtown Crossing.

Additional Lane Restrictions to Begin on I-65
Additional lane restrictions are scheduled to begin on I-65 in Southern Indiana. The inside lanes (left lanes) of I-65 North and I-65 South will be closed for a two-mile stretch, extending from approximately mile marker 1.5 to mile marker 3.5. The lane closures extend from near Brown's Station Way to just south of Veterans Parkway.

The lane restrictions will reduce I-65, in both directions, from four through lanes of traffic to three lanes. The closures are expected to be in place by early Thursday morning and continue through mid-September.

During the lane closures, crews with Walsh Construction will demolish existing barrier wall, build sign foundations and complete needed fiber optic work.

The actual start date and duration of the work may be adjusted because of inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.
