Truck farm to bring food education to Louisville streets

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- It's not your traditional garden.

This garden, which is home to a variety of herbs, vegetables and flowers, is in the back of a pickup truck.

"It's great. We can get to people now. The people who can't get to us, we can get to them,” said Deandrea Hughes, a fifth year student with the Youth Community Agriculture Program at Oxmoor Farm.

He and a group of teenagers helped plant the truck farm.

It's a new initiative with the Food Literacy Project.

"We think truck farm helps with a powerful statement about our city's commitment to the place of local food in our city. It's important not just for local development but for health and community,” said Angelique Perez, assistant director for the Food Literacy Project.

Perez says the truck farm will serve as an educational, hands on tool.

"We'll be at parades, farmers markets, all kinds of community events,” Perez told WDRB.

Anyone can use the mobile garden to dig in the dirt and learn where and how food grows.

She says it's especially rewarding to watch the students learn about agriculture in such a unique way.

"They've certainly seen things growing in the ground perhaps but to know and distinguish between an eggplant, a tomato, an herb, a cilantro and basil. They get that chance to really get up close and smell and taste and touch,” said Perez.

And the students are learning how to use their vegetables at home.

My favorite thing is the cooking. Using fresh vegetables to cook and fresh ingredients. It's not processed oils, processed butter. It's all natural everything,” said Hughes.

The best way to find out where the truck farm is headed is through social media. Follow them here on Twitter and Facebook.
