LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) – If you have an upcoming pick in this year's NBA draft, UK head coach John Calipari says you can't go wrong choosing someone from Kentucky.
“Our goal is not just to help guys get into the league; we want guys to become all-stars.” said Calipari.
Seven UK players are available in next Thursday's draft from Brooklyn, New York. Calipari spoke about each player during a special Thursday teleconference.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have the first pick entering this year's draft. Calipari said it would be wise for them to draft Karl Anthony-Towns.
“Young guys are going into the league just trying to score and get paid. Karl comes in, he is a great teammate. But more importantly, for the fans and the team up there, he's fine. He said, ‘Let's go Minnesota!' So I think those are the two important things.”
Calipari knows the current NBA favors small ball and league executives are skeptical of big men now more than ever. However, Calipari feels Towns, Willie Cauley-Stein, and Trey Lyles can adapt to whatever style their team needs.
“We basically play position-less basketball and have for some time. It's not trying to pigeon hole any player in one position. I want them all to be multi-position players.”
Speaking about his former guards, Calipari said Devin Booker has worked on his defensive limitations and will be ready for the NBA. He also has no doubt Aaron Harrison will hear his named called in the draft.
“I'm not worried. I think he'll be drafted. And let me say this: I'll go even further; I think he'll be in the league for a while. And I believe that because of his ability to play multiple positions.”
