LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police say they've arrested two grandparents after they allegedly let their grandchildren run loose at a downtown hotel.

It happened on Thursday, just before 5 p.m., at a hotel on E. Jefferson Street, near S. First Street.

Police say hotel staff became concerned when they saw a 3-year-old and a 4-year-old walking around the hotel alone. According to an arrest citation and an arrest warrant, the employees at the hotel were able to identify the hotel room where the children were staying and found their grandparents, 42-year-old Dale E. Wimber and 45-year-old Margaret Wimber, inside.

When hotel staff were unable to wake them, they called 911.

According to court documents, Margaret Wimber was unable to speak coherently to EMS responders, so she was immediately taken to University Hospital.

Police say the EMS workers told them that both grandparents "were exhibiting symptoms of opiate use."

Neither grandparent could tell officers where their grandchildren were or how they had left the hotel room, according to arrest reports. Police say the Wimbers, "were not concerned about the children or their whereabouts."

"The grandparents exhibited an extreme indifference to human life by leaving the children unattended to walk around the hotel and downtown Louisville," police wrote in an arrest report.

Dale Wimber was arrested at the hotel just before 7 p.m. and charged with two counts of first degree wanton endangerment. Margaret Wimber was arrested at the hospital at 12:30 a.m. on Friday and faces the same charges.

Neither suspect is facing drug charges at this time, according to the arrest report information.
