LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) – Jake Thelen's life is about to change.
“I never thought it was possible,” said Thelen. “Thankfully, the preparation that my coaches gave us at Bellarmine has set me up for this opportunity. I'm very blessed.”
The opportunity Thelen has in front of him is a chance to live out a dream and play the game he loves professionally. But there's a catch. He has to do it overseas.
“It will be different. I mean the language barrier. It's a whole different culture.”
And with it, a whole new life.
Shortly after graduating from Bellarmine, the reigning GLVC player of the year signed with an agent who knows the ins and outs of international basketball. Right now, Thelen says his agent is currently negotiating with teams in four different countries.
“You want to the best offer and you want the best place where you'd fit in.”
Thelen says he should know within the next month or so where he'll wind up. For now, the 6- 7 forward is keeping in shape at the Kentuckiana Pro Am, playing with Chris Dowe, a former teammate at Bellarmine who not too long ago made the same transition to life overseas.
“The adjustment is more, are you comfortable having the lifestyle off the court?” said Dowe, who graduated from Bellarmine in 2013. “I think Jake will be fine.”
Thelen has never actually been outside the US before but he's confident he'll be able to adjust.
“I think any obstacle that comes my way, I'll be able to overcome it,” said Thelen.
His bag is packed and he's ready to go. Jake Thelen is ready to take on the world.
