LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - More than 50 teams hit the court Saturday in downtown Louisville hoping to win WDRB's "Hoop It Up."

It's a two-day national tournament, the eleventh time its been held in Louisville.

Dona Smith who has been one of the directors for nine of those years, said they didn't let a little morning rain affect the tournament.

"I know everybody here pretty much," she said. "And they knew that just because it was raining, I wasn't gonna cancel it. So they all showed up."

There was, however a rain delay until noon.

But out of the 59 teams that signed up, not one of them canceled.

Teams included players as young as 9-years-old.

"We have guys that re in their 40s that are still playing," Smith said.

Instead of 2s and 3s, baskets are scored by 1s and 2s.

The first to 15, or whichever team is ahead after 15 minutes, wins.

The top teams hit the court for playoffs on Sunday.

Even Master P made an appearance Saturday.

The big thing again again this year was the Top Gun division, featuring 11 teams of semi-pro players or guys who played in college.

"The winner could qualify to go to Mexico to play for $20,000," Smith said.

Frank Inman of New Albany is one player in the Top Gun division.

He played college basketball at IUS.

"It's fun," Inman said. "I mean you get a lot of competition and guys come out here and play hard."

And it's not just an event for the players.

Everyone's invited and welcome, especially families.

"You can go to every single court and they've traveled with families," Smith said. "That's what it's all about, that's what I try to push."

After a rain delay was issued earlier in the week, Sunday's games will now again start at the original time, 9 a.m.
