LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Democrat U.S. Congressman John Yarmuth has announced his intention to seek re-election next year for a sixth term in 2016.

Congressman Yarmuth made the announcement during a news conference Monday morning at his campaign headquarters.

He said he is issuing the announcement early in an effort to defeat rumors that he would not run again for office.

Yarmuth represents Kentucky's 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

During the news conference, Yarmuth said the ability to help people in the district makes his job rewarding. He also said he wants to remain a progressive voice.

In a press release about his plans to seek re-election Yarmuth had this to say:
"As the lone progressive voice in Kentucky's federal delegation, I take very seriously my responsibility to fight for our community's values in Washington. The Republican Leadership has become more extreme, and they have increasingly pursued an agenda that threatens the livelihoods and opportunities of families in Louisville and throughout the nation. I believe the work of changing the priorities of the next Congress is critically important, and that's why I'm running for re-election in 2016."

Yarmuth said his priorities include reform in the areas of immigration and campaign finance. He also stated it's unlikely he will remain in office until the 2020 presidential election.
