LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Local veterans are learning the importance of expression as they overcome personal challenges associated with service overseas.

Elected officials were on hand Monday as the VA Medical Center was awarded a $35,000 grant to continue its Arts in Healing program.

Along with other traditional forms of therapy, veterans also find outlets of expression through music, art, drama and creative writing.

"It calls attention to the fact we need to continue to encourage our soldiers, our brave men and women to express themselves talk about what they've been through that way we can learn what they've been through and they can deal with what they've been through," U.S. Representative John Yarmuth said.

About 4,000 local veterans are expected to participate in the Arts in Healing therapy this year.
