UPDATE: Body of a woman found near Jefferson-Bullitt County line

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A homicide investigation is underway on Pendleton Road near the Jefferson-Bullitt County line.

According to Louisville Metro Police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley, the body of a woman was found near that location at around 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

"We do believe there was some type of foul play or trauma involved, which is why we're treating it as an investigation," Smiley told reporters. "Specifically who this person is is what's going to have to still be determined. We'll have to await the coroner's report to get a positive identification, as well as a cause of death at this point."

"We do believe the body has been here a few days," Smiley said.

Family members of Meagan Lee Hassler, a woman who has been reported missing, showed up at the scene, but police declined to officially connect the two cases. Those family members included Hassler's brother and the father of her child.

"So there is a missing girl you guys have been looking for, but you don't know if that's her?" asked WDRB's Stephan Johnson.

"We haven't been able to put two-and-two together but that is an avenue that we will be investigating," said Smiley.

Louisville Metro Police is working the case because, even though the body was found in Bullitt County, police believe the crime may have originated in Jefferson County.
