LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Louisville Metro Police arrested a man and a woman for the murder of a missing teen Tuesday night.

According to arrest citations, police arrested Monica Mudd and Todd Byrd for the murder of Megan Hassler, after her body was located in a ravine near Pendleton Hill Road Tuesday. Both have been charged with murder and kidnapping with serious physical injury.

"We're shocked, and mad, upset. Sad," Hassler's cousin Kalyn Payton said, "We don't really know how to take it at this point, we're still shocked"

Police say Mudd came to police Monday and confessed to killing Hassler after she and Byrd forcefully abducted her. According to the report Mudd told police she and Byrd were searching the girl for what they said were stolen drugs.

Police say Mudd told them she made Hassler take off her clothes so they could search her. The pair then took Mudd to Pendleton Hill Road and shot her in the head before dumping her body into the ravine, according to the citation.

Police say Hassler's father reported her missing on June 20.

"You never expect anything like this to happen to someone you love," said Payton. "It's devastating."

Family members tell WDRB News that they learned about Hassler's death Tuesday afternoon but did not hear about the arrest of Mudd and Byrd until later Tuesday evening.

"When there had been no contact for a couple of days, I had a gut feeling that we weren't going to find her safe or okay," Payton said.
