Freeman Lake Park home to historic Elizabethtown attractions

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB)---Freeman Lake Park in Elizabethtown is a popular spot for those wanting to relax.

In the middle of this quiet setting, you'll find two historic sites.

The Lincoln Heritage House has two log houses. The first was built in 1789. The second was built in 1805, with the help of a familiar name.

"It's important to Hardin Countians because it was our last link to Thomas Lincoln,” said Susan McCrobie, with the Hardin Co. Historical Society.

Thomas Lincoln is the father of former President Abraham Lincoln, and this cabin where he did carpentry and cabinet-work is well known.

“It's on the Kentucky Abraham Lincoln trail,” said Susan McCrobie.

The original cabin was destroyed by an arsonist in 2009.

“That's all that survived the fire,” said Susan McCrobie.

The home was rebuilt several years later. It is still a work in progress.

Next door, you'll find another piece of history: a one-room school that opened in Summit, Kentucky in 1892 to students of all ages.

“At one time this room had 101 students, but I had 19,” said Julia Richardson, a former teacher.

It was the first school where Richardson decided to teach.

“And my father-in-law said to me, 'Julie, why don't you give it a twirl' so I did,” Richardson said.

She was the last teacher at the school when it closed in 1953.

Known as the 'finest school in the county,' it was used to store hay when it closed.

It was finally donated and moved to Freeman Lake Park in 1978.

Inside, you'll find books, desks, and other items that would have been used in the school.

“And I still look forward to coming back to this little school with the memories that I've had with it,” said Richardson.

Both buildings serve as historic sites that are still standing in Hardin County.

The Lincoln Heritage House is not currently open to the public, but you can make appointments to tour the One-Room School.
