LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Dozens gathered to remember the life of Meagan Lee Hassler on Wednesday night.

According to an LMPD arrest report, Hassler was murdered and her body dumped in a wooded area near the Jefferson and Bullitt County line. Her body was discovered on Tuesday.

“I feel like I need to know what those monsters did to my cousin,” Hassler's cousin Sallie Payton said at the candlelight vigil, “Nobody should ever have to go through that -- bury their child -- it's just hard.”

Todd Byrd and Monica Mudd are charged with murder and kidnapping in the case.

According to LMPD arrest reports, Mudd confessed to detectives on Monday.

She said she and Byrd kidnapped Hassler, drove her to a wooded area near the Jefferson and Bullitt County line then shot her. Those arrest reports say it started as an argument over drugs.

Hassler was 19-years-old and had a two-year-old son named Eli.

“He'll know, he'll learn, he'll have better memories,” said Hassler's father Jack of his grandson Eli.

Mudd and Byrd are booked in Metro Corrections on $750,000 bond.

The coroner's office has yet to officially identify the body found on Wednesday as Hassler's.

“Despicable, beyond despicable,” Jack Hassler said, “The ones that have seen more need to come up and talk. The ones that know more need to come up and talk.”
