LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A California woman told investigators she fatally stabbed a man in self defense near a Bullitt County rest stop last week, but police now say it was murder.

Nicole Skyberg, 26, had a few days of freedom after police say she killed Aaron Jerrell.

Jerrell was found lying outside his truck near a rest stop along I-65 Saturday afternoon.

Officials say he was stabbed in the arm and bled to death. They say Skyberg was a passenger in his truck and stayed on the scene.

Early in the investigation, police said they thought this may be a case of self defense.

"The investigation continued," said Officer Ken Bernardi. "We talked to more witnesses, examined more physical evidence and, after meeting with the Commonwealth Attorney's office, an arrest warrant was obtained."

Police also say Skyberg's story changed.

According to the arrest warrant, she first told police that Jerrell came at her with a knife. Then she said she had the knife in her pocket and stabbed him after he made a sexual advance at her. The documents say Skyberg later told police nothing happened.

She was arrested Wednesday.

We're told Skyberg, who is from California, may have been hitchhiking.

Police confirm Jerrell was a registered sex offender from Alabama. Online records show that he was convicted of raping a 14-year-old in 2000.

"I don't really know where they encountered each other first," Bernardi said. "All I know for certain is that she was a passenger in his vehicle."

Authorities say they still don't know where the two were heading.

"No investigation is totally, 100 percent complete, until you have all the information. In this case, we're still looking, still asking questions, still looking for information," Bernardi said.

For now, Skyberg is being held at the Bullitt County Jail. The case is expected to go before a grand jury.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Shepherdsville Police at 502-921-1000 or the anonymous tip line at 502-215-1588.
