Louisville leaders gather to discuss how green roofs can bolster sustainability

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- People from around the city gathered Friday in an effort to make the city more sustainable.

About 150 people from various organizations gathered for a meeting about the benefits and challenges of green roofs today.

Roofs made up of living plants are expected to save about 25 percent in energy costs for most buildings. The roofs also help recycle rainwater.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer says many of us have changed the way we talk about sustainability of late.

"We care about the environment because we care about people," said Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer. "And Louisvillians should be proud because we have an Office of Sustainability that's one of the best in the country, so it's about reducing greenhouse gas emissions and everyone can participate in that because it's about the quality of the air."

The city also recently introduced a fleet of Zerobuses, which are powered by batteries.
