LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Eight people escaped a house fire in Louisville's Russell neighborhood early Monday.

Fire crews were called to a home on Chestnut Street near 26th Street just after 1 a.m. When they arrived, firefighters found a two story home with flames coming out the front.  The fire also spread to homes on either side.

Louisville Fire & Rescue Lieutenant Colonel Carroll Hauter says a woman was up watching television, when the screen went dark and she heard crackling.  When she looked out the front window, the front of the house was on fire.  She was able to get four other adults and three children out safely.

Hauter says it took five engines and three trucks almost 30 minutes to get the fire under control. He says the front of the home was destroyed, but neighboring homes suffered only exterior damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
