LOUISVILLE, Ky, (WDRB) -- A longtime educator has been named the new director of early childhood education for Jefferson County Public Schools.

James Francis joined JCPS as a compliance officer in early childhood education last year, he previously worked in the district's human resources department from 2006-2010. He was named the director of early childhood on Friday and started his new job Monday.

"We are very excited, Dr. Francis will be an extremely strong leader," said Karen Branham, the director of curriculum and instruction for JCPS.

Francis has also served as the regional director of federal programs for the Tennessee Department of Education and as superintendent of Laurel County Schools and Hazard Independent Schools in Kentucky. He was also a superintendent for Wilson County Schools in Lebanon County Schools in Tennessee.

Francis replaces Kevin Nix, who has been named the new principal of Alex Kennedy Elementary School, a former middle school that will re-open as an elementary school this fall to help ease overcrowding in eastern Jefferson County.
