People of Earth get extra second today, Tuesday, June 30, 2015

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Got an extra second? You do today!

We're going to get an extra tick of the clock at 8 p.m. tonight.

It's known as a "leap second" -- and it helps make up for slight variations in time.

Since the Earth doesn't rotate at exactly the same rate each year, the small adjustment apparently keeps us all on track.

The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service unleashed the "leap second" in the 1970s. The last time it happened was in 2012.
