LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Police have arrested a Montgomery County man on allegations that he possessed and distributed child pornography.

According to a news release, Daniel Whitt, 44, was arrested Tuesday evening by officials with KSP's Electronic Crime Branch. They received assistance in Whitt's arrest from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department.

Whitt was arrested following a search of his home.

Officials say an undercover investigation was launched after KSP's Electronic Crime Branch discovered Whitt sharing images of child sexual exploitation online. Authorities say some of the images included prepubescent children engaged in sexual acts.

Police say Whitt is a registered sex offender.

Officials took equipment believed to have been used in the crime and sent it to a state police forensic lab to be examined.

Whitt is charged with 20 counts of possession and four counts of distribution of matter portraying a sex performance by a minor. Each count is punishable by one to five years in prison.

Whitt is being held at the Montgomery County Regional Jail. The investigation is ongoing.
