LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- I-64 westbound was closed near Simpsonville due to a fatal accident Thursday afternoon, but it has since reopened, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

All lanes of I-64 West were blocked at mile point 27.2. Kentucky State Police and Shelby County EMS were called to the scene for a serious accident.

According to a press release, police say a car traveling westbound on I-64 veered off the roadway, down an embankment and struck a large tree around 3:15.

Four passengers were inside. According to police, one adult was killed, while another adult and two children were taken to the hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available.

It was a single car accident involving a silver Toyota that ran off the road and hit the tree. Police say it was not raining at the time of the accident.

KSP said crash resconstructionists needed about an hour and a half before one lane of I-64 could reopen.

Traffic was being detoured off the interstate at Exit 28 in Simpsonville to US 60.
