FISCHER: Proposed sale of Humana to Aetna 'an opportunity to grow even further'

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer called the proposed sale of Louisville-based Humana to health insurance giant Aetna, "an opportunity to grow even further" in the city, though he recognized the concerns local employees might have about the deal.

In a news conference Friday morning, Fischer said that, given Humana's roots in Louisville, "it's only natural for families to be concerned."

Fischer told reporters that the sale would "grow the Humana footprint." He said he's spoken with the CEOs of both Humana and Aetna and that Aetna plans to make Louisville the headquarters for the Medicare, Medicaid and TRICARE arms of the business. Humana's corporate presence would also be maintained, according to Fischer.

Fischer said the Humana Foundation would not be part of the sale, and would remain independent.

He said the sale is expected to close in the second half of 2016.

Fischer said the future of Humana would have been uncertain, had it not been for the Aetna deal.
