LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A memorial dedicated to the lives lost in the Global War on Terrorism opened at Wilkerson Park Saturday.

It will include the names of those who've died from the Sellersburg, Memphis, Henryville and Borden communities.

The first name engraved on it is Marine Corporal Jordan Spears.

The 21-year-old died in October during a training accident in the Arabian Sea.

He was the first American killed in operations against ISIS.

Spear's mother Cosette says the turnout for the unveiling was impressive.

"I expected it because I know this community. I really did expect it and it doesn't surprise me at all. It makes me joyful, happy, but I knew they'd be here."

The Spears family, along with Sellersburg Town Councilman Brad Amos, have been working on this memorial since the start of the year.
