SPARTA, KY. (WDRB) – Carl Edwards says he feels right at home at Kentucky Speedway.
“For me, this weekend is really special,” said Edwards. “This is the place of my first win in NASCAR in the Truck Series.”
That was back in 2003. Two years later, Edwards would pick up a Nationwide Series win. He’s 0-4 in Sprint Cup races in Sparta, a losing streak he hopes to end this Saturday.
“This is going to be a really tough race. You’ll see guys really struggling. Hopefully, we’ll struggle less.”
Should Edwards win this weekend, he’ll do so under a new aerodynamics rules package implemented by NASCAR for Saturday’s race. The package features a lower spoiler and front splitter.
“We’re going in the direction I’ve wanted to go for a while,” said Edwards. “It’s a less down force package. I’m excited to see how it runs.”
NASCAR hopes it results in more side by side racing. The style that made Edwards fall in love with the sport in the first place.
“Stock car races are races where guys are driving sideways and using every bit of the tire. It’s the heart and soul of what NASCAR is all about.”
Teams hoped to test out their cars under the new package Wednesday but were unable to do so because of the weather.
Teams will try again Thursday morning.
