Officials release cause of Whiskey Row fire

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- We now know the cause of the fire that damaged several historic buildings on Louisville's Whiskey Row.

Fire officials tell us it was "accidental."

Investigators tell us workers trying to renovate the buildings were using acetylene torches and grinders to remove old cast iron piping, electrical conduits and sprinkler pipes. Major Henry Ott says the sprinkler system was already out of service.

"We believe that, in that cutting operation, either slag dropped down and smoldered in the old wood and then that's what started burning," said Ott. "We believe that the cause of the fire is going to be combustibles ignited during a cutting operation."

Ott says when the workers left the building, they didn't think there was a fire. He says the fire started 45 minutes to an hour after they finished the cutting operation.
