LMPD officers and bomb squad invade Russell neighborhood community center

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- LMPD officers and the bomb squad invaded a community center full of children Thursday, but there was no crime scene.

Instead, it was part of a workshop to help kids see police officers in a more positive light.

Officers visited dozens of kids at the Baxter Community Center in the Russell neighborhood. Some got a close look at the bomb squad robot. Others got to try on protective gear and see what's inside an officer's car.

It's a way to show kids there's more to being an officer than making arrests.

"Our job is the quality of life here, and I need to be able to brainstorm and come up with other ways to advance quality of life other than just arresting people," said LMPD Ofc. Roger Collins.

Metro Parks and Recreation and LMPD put on the workshop.
