LEITCHFIELD, Ky. (WDRB) – Grayson county sheriff Norman Chaffins is putting out a warning to anyone who might be even think of providing alcohol to an underage person.

If an adult is providing that alcohol, that adult is going to be held accountable,” Chaffins said, “if we prove who it is.”

He says that usually during the summer they will see a spike in issues with underage drinking but recently things have taken a turn for the worse.

“We're seeing a lot on the weekends especially during the summertime on the lake and camping out and things like that,” he said.

In one recent instance, Chaffins says a teenager had to be taken to the hospital because of binge drinking. The teen’s mother had to call 911.

“She couldn't wake him up,” Chaffins said, “She had to call EMS and an officer out there to try to revive him. Luckily he came to and is doing much better now.”

According to statistics from the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, underage binge drinking accounts for more than 4,300 deaths of underage people every year. In 2010, a total of 198,000 underage people had to be taken to the emergency room because of drinking related problems.

“This is something we can't ignore,” Chaffins said, ”This is something we have to look at.”

Chaffins says several cases are under investigation and he’s instructed his deputies to take a harder look at all cases of underage drinking.

“The attitude of 'well, at least they're drinking at home’ -- well this kid was at home and he was still hurt or injured and we're seeing that more and more,” Chaffins added.
