CORYDON, Ind. (WDRB) -- A Harrison County teacher has been sentenced to a year behind bars for his sexual relationship with a student.

Kellen Hubert pleaded guilty to child seduction and it was left up to a judge to decide his punishment Thursday.

The 29-year-old was a teacher at Corydon Central Junior High School, according to officials.

Court documents say a student's mother found text messages between her 16-year-old daughter and Hubert.

The victim told investigators that she and Hubert engaged in sex acts on several occasions. He was arrested in December.

During his sentencing, Hubert's mother, grandfather and wife all asked that he not be sent to prison.

Hubert's wife said, "I am so proud to be his wife, even still." She also told the judge that her husband regrets what happened.

Hubert took the stand while holding back tears.

"I made a terrible series of mistakes," he said. Hubert also said he was sorry to the victim.

The 16-year-old's grandmother was in court and also made a statement.

She asked for leniency and no jail time. She told the judge that everyone has already suffered enough.

"There's always a range of emotions, there's a roller coaster of emotions and everyone deals with the facts of the case differently," said Harrison County Prosecutor Otto Schalk. "It's certainly understandable why they had a position. I think the court, they listened to the evidence and I believe the court made the correct ruling."

The judge decided to sentence Hubert to one year in prison and just over a year on probation.

He'll also be on the sex offender registry for 10 years.

Hubert's family members got to say goodbye after court. He was booked following the hearing.

Hubert's family declined to comment for this story.
