LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — It has been some kind of year for University of Louisville junior swimmer Kelsi Worrell — and it may only be a prelude.

Worrell, who broke the 13-year-old American record in the 100 meter butterfly on her way to winning the NCAA championship in the event in March, broke the Pan American Games 100 fly record on Thursday in Toronto.

Worrell shattered the Pan Am record in the morning preliminaries with a time of 54.03 seconds, the third-fastest in the world this year. In the finals, she swam a 57.78 for the gold medal, adding it to her silver medal in the 400-meter freestyle relay on Wednesday.

She became the first woman to break the 50-second barrier in the 100-yard butterfly at the NCAA championships.

She’s not the only U of L swimming product turning in big performances in Toronto.

Former Cardinal Joao DeLucca of Brazil has won three golds including 400 freestyle relay (48.04), 800 freestyle relay (1:47.71) and the No. 9 performance in the world in winning the 200 freestyle in an Pan Am Games record of 1:46.42.
