JCPS students get free backpacks in back-to-school program

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - JCPS students head back to class in less than a month, and the city of Louisville wants to make sure they're prepared.

The Department of Community Services held its first of six "Back to School" events Saturday.

This one, put on by Neighborhood Place, was at Lynnhurst United Church of Christ.

Saturday's giveaway included backpacks filled with health products.

Organizers say a lot of families don't have all the resources to begin school, and students need to be prepared.

"Well I mean you have to have it to get through class right?," Neighborhood Place Administrator Jacqueline Johnson said.

"So you need the pencils and pens, the paper, the folders on the school list so they need those items. And then for the health products, you want to take a bath before school so you need your soap, your washcloth, deodorant, toothbrush ... So we can practice good hygiene for the kids as well."

Kids also had the chance to get their faces painted and pick up a free lunch.

There are five more back to school events planned.
