School Smarts: McFerran's Head Start learns healthy lifestyle lessons
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Pamela Mudd-Sutton started the McFerran's Head Start One Mile Walkers Club in 2009.
It's a fitness and health program to teach students and families about adopting a healthier lifestyle.
Pamela and her family fund the program through community donations.
The Mayor's Healthy Hometown Communications Director Kathy Harrison and the entire staff inspired her to join the fight against childhood obesity.
She coordinates physical activities that keep the students engaged and moving.
Parents are encourage to get involved in and outside of school.
She has nurtured a garden at McFerran Elementary School to teach kids about the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables.
The foods that come from the garden are sent home with students to be prepared with their families.
The program runs Monday through Friday even during the summer.
