JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- Class is in session for dozens of Amazon employees. They’re workers by day and students by night, reaping the benefits of Amazon's Career Choice program.
It pre-pays up to 95 percent of their tuition for college classes but, instead of commuting to a campus after work, Amazon employees are now learning right in the workplace.
"It’s a dedicated, on-site classroom here at our Fulfillment Center that we built for the express purposes of making it easier for our associates to go back to school," said Amazon spokesperson Nina Lindsey
Pamela Sharp has worked at Amazon for three years.
As a mother and grandmother, the new on-site classroom aligns perfectly with her busy schedule.
“It is wonderful to be able to have our schedule adjusted where we can just come into the classroom from work. We do not have to worry about the traffic, commuting back and forth,” Sharp said.
Employees can enroll in classes that are relevant to Amazon or completely unrelated and are taught by seasoned instructors from across the area.
Ivy Tech Corporate College partners with Amazon to make this program possible, providing instructors and tools to help employees reach greater heights.
“They don’t have to leave the building and they don’t have to come to campus to have this perfect environment with up-to-date IT, all the amenities they would have here on campus,” said Ivy Tech Chancellor Dr. Rita Hudson Shourds.
The new state of the art equipment and glass walls are designed to attract other employees who aren't yet on board.
Amazon and Ivy Tech officials are hoping that that someone will walk by and become inspired by what's happening on the other side.
As part of the program, 95 percent of an employee's tuition is pre-paid up to $12,000 during four years as well as reimbursement for books, supplies and fees on the first day of class. According to the U.S. Department of Education, the average 2-year degree costs less than $9,000.
Employees who complete their respective programs will receive a certificate and are encouraged to further their education.
They have to have at least one year under their belt at Amazon before enrolling.
