15-year-old accused of killing her newborn infant out of hospital, in police custody
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The 15-year-old girl accused of killing her newborn baby early Wednesday morning was released from the hospital today and taken into police custody.
Police say the teen, whose identity is not being released because she is a juvenile, admitted to intentionally smothering the baby.
She is charged with murder, tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse.
A friend of the teen called 911 after receiving a series of text messages from the 15-year-old telling her she had killed the baby, saying "I had to kill it."
"I'm crying so much, please don't tell anyone," the girl read from messages she received.
The texts continued: "I was in the hospital, my granny had another stroke. So I walked outside and I overheated and now I'm in the hospital and around 4 this morning I pushed out the baby in the toilet. It was crying and opening its eyes and everything. I had to kill it."
The girl also sent a picture of the dead baby. One text said she put the newborn in a dresser drawer of her grandmother's room at the Frazier Rehab Center on Abraham Flexner Way. She told her friend she planned to bury the infant after she got home.
The teen called 911 after being asked if she wanted to help bury the infant. The dead baby was found in the girl's purse when she was arrested.
Police say the suspect is currently being held in the Jefferson County Youth Detention Center.
