Companies donate own time and money to refurbish historic pylons for Second Street Bridge

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Work to light up another bridge has gotten personal, with companies donating their own time and money.

Historic pylons on the Indiana approach to the Second Street Bridge were taken down about a year and a half ago as part of the bridges project. They're being incorporated into the new design, but the state was not going to refurbish them.

A southern Indiana man and subcontractor took it upon himself to make sure the tower lights were restored.

After sandblasting, repairing and repainting, they're going back up today.

"I think it's going to be really neat," said Lee Sweeney of James H. Drew Transportation. "It's a part of history of the Second Street Bridge and southern Indiana."

James H. Drew Transportation and several other companies on both sides of the river donated thousands of dollars in time and supplies for the project.
