LANE | Toppers Wrap Up Louisville Tour

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Members of the Western Kentucky football Hilltoppers capped a busy couple of days in the Louisville area with the second annual kickoff party.  The event at Buffalo Wild Wings in Shelbyville Road Plaza brought out hundreds of Topper fans with plenty of food and drink, music and dancing, a prize wheel and a raffle with a chance to win a brand new red Corvette.

Head Coach Jeff Brohm and Quarterback Brandon Doughty started the two-day media blitz with their live appearance on WDRB-TV Monday night.  They then got a quick night's sleep and made it back to our studio for a rousing follow-up appearance with the WDRB In the Morning Team, where I'm told they weren't too freaked out by our meteorologist and Western super fan Jude Redfield.

Brohm and Doughty were the obvious headliners of the tour which continued with radio and TV interviews throughout the day Tuesday.  Doughty was the nation's leader with nearly 4830 yards and 49 touchdowns passing.  He was the triggerman of the offense run by Brohm, the former Trinity and U of L Quarterback now starting his second season as head coach and play-caller.  But to improve on last year's 8-5 record, Western will likely need improvement from its defense.

Former U of L assistant Nick Holt is back as defensive coordinator.  He's added a couple of big guys from UAB who should contribute right away on the defensive front and Holt is confident his unit will continue the strides they made toward the end of last season.

"We got better," said Holt. "We did some good things.  A lot of these guys are back.  They've got a lot of confidence, a lot of plays under their belts.  If we just do our part on defense; eliminate the big plays is really the biggest key.  Our offense is going to have their days when they struggle and that's when we have to pick up the slack and I think we can do that.  We talk about getting better, playing more physical, playing fast, knowing our assignments, getting better at the little things.  I think in the long run we'll be OK."

Western opens the 2015 campaign on September 3rd at Vanderbilt.
