Former UK and professional football player hands out free school supplies to kids

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - A former NFL player is helping families get ready for school by handing out free backpacks.

Terry Samuels, a former University of Kentucky football player who was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals, now owns an Allstate agency.

On Saturday, he handed out more than 400 sets of back-to-school supplies, including 225 backpacks.

They were filled with everything from pencils and erasers to glue sticks and notebooks.

Samuels is from the Newburg area and said he had some tough times growing up and wanted to give back to the kids.

"When you have the proper materials, I think that makes the atmosphere more conducive for you to learn," he said. "When you go in and you don't have a pencil, you don't have folders, you're already behind all the other kids. So I want everybody to have the same start."

Samuels bought everything on his own and hopes to turn this giveaway into a yearly event.
