LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - LG&E and KU partnered with local non-profits Saturday, giving brand new backpacks and school supplies to thousands of area kids.

They handed out more than 3,000 backpacks at their Broadway office.

And 3,600 more will be going to different resource centers across Louisville.

"By combining our back to school events with our single largest volunteerism event, it just really helps us enhance our ability to help these students start on the right foot," LG&E/KU spokesperson Liz Pratt said. "Because really, these students are going to be our community's future leaders."

This is the fourteenth year for the event.

Employees and their families stuffed the backpacks Friday night with items like paper, markers, folders, pens and pencils.
