Shower trailer provides hope and fresh start for homeless

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- Soap, a shower and hot water are normally simple luxuries that can be taken for granted. For people living on the streets, a daily shower just isn't possible.

“You're all hot and sweaty. People look at you differently, and it’s a new start,” Matt Turner said.

But now getting that fresh, clean feeling is a possibility thanks to Exit 0 in Jeffersonville. Its new shower trailer has two showers and an endless supply of towels.

“It's the one time you get to feel like a real girl. You're walking around, you're dirty, your hair is sticking to you. You keep trying to brush it but you can’t get a brush through it. Its matted, then you get in that shower, get clean and just for a few minutes you're a real girl again,” Phaedra Turner said.

Phaedra and Matt Turner have been homeless for more than a year. Their bathing schedule used to be once every two weeks and often took place in a creek. They say the showers will help them get off the streets.

“You get a job interview and you ask Paul if you can take a shower. It's like a brand new you. You feel more confident. It's a positive thing,” Matt said.

Paul Stensrud, director of Exit 0, says for seven years he's wanted to bring dignity to the homeless.

“When I hear folks saying I'd like to get a shower before going to the doctor … A week of not taking a shower and look at the looks you get from the people you sit near or from the doctor,” Stensrud said.

And now the trailer is getting a washer and dryer, an upgrade the Turners can't wait to use because of the rainy summer.

“What isn't dirty is molding, and just having things that don't smell mildew ... it’s just very exciting,” Phaedra said.

Exit 0 is at the corner of Federal and Spring Street in Jeffersonville. More than 275 showers have been taken since April.

The non-profit also serves meals and provides various resources to help end homelessness.
