JCPS transportation hotline open for questions about bus routes

Posted: Updated:

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ky. (WDRB) -- More than 100,000 JCPS students head back to class Wednesday.

That's why the district has once again set up a hotline for anyone who may have questions about the first day.

Dr. Donna Hargens is about to begin her fifth year as superintendent of JCPS. She's helping other staff members answer phone calls coming into 485-RIDE.

The hotline opened Sunday for anyone with questions about school transportation before class starts on Wednesday.

"We'll go online and put their address in, and then we'll tell them where the bus is going to be," Hargens said.

Parents can do the same thing on the district’s web page. There's also a disclaimer asking them to check the walk path before students head out to make sure it’s safe.

If you'd rather call in, volunteers answering six different phone lines can let you know what time the bus is supposed to show up and where.

"Well I think everybody wants to be ready on the first day and be on time to the bus stop,” Hargens said. “So it’s really location and then also: Is there a closer bus route?"

Nearly 950 bus drivers have spent the past couple weeks training on their 2,700 routes. New this year, the district eliminated bus depots for elementary students, meaning no more transfer stations except for those in the magnet program.

Every bus also has GPS, giving drivers access to routing information.

"So that means that should be a more efficient bus ride for our elementary students,” Hargens said. “So that was part of what we expected with the plan that we developed, and we're now seeing that actually happen."

The amount of time a student spends on a JCPS bus has gone down a couple of minutes since 2012. Last year it was 26.3 minutes, but Hargens says the speed is not their main concern.

"So we want to make sure we've got everything right,” she said. “But last year we were around 6:35 p.m. for the last student to be delivered home, and we only had about 100 students as we got near the end of that."

Hargens hopes to improve that time this year, but asks everyone to be patient as the district tries to get it right on the first day.
