Man accused of shooting and killing man who broke into home pleads not guilty

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A $500,000 bond has been set for the man who allegedly shot and killed a man who broke into his home.

Deontae Yarnell's lawyer spoke in arraignment court Monday morning.

"He came home and found them in his home -- his personal residence where he lives," said attorney Scott Cox. "He fired shots at one of the men, a chase ensued and one of the men was shot and killed by Mr. Yarnell."

The shooting happened early Saturday morning on Halsey Court, near Iroquois Park.

Yarnell told investigators he began shooting at two people as they ran away. The police report says Yarnell chased one man a full block before shooting him again and killing him.

Kentucky Law allows a person to defend his or her property with deadly force if he or she feels threatened, but doesn't offer protection once an intruder leaves the property.

Yarnell has pleaded not guilty.
