LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A senior petroleum analyst is warning that local gas prices could see a big hike in the next week.

According to Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for the website GasBuddy.com, the problem stems from an area refinery.

"Refinery problems at BP's Whiting, Indiana, refinery are likely to drive up retail gasoline prices 10-15c/gal during the next week for motorists in Midwest and Great Lakes," an e-mail from DeHaan reads. "Over the weekend, BP's refinery unexpectedly experienced issues with its largest crude distillation unit, capable of refining over half...of the total refinery's oil capacity."

"Almost immediately, market gasoline prices shot up on the concerns of reduced gasoline supply from the BP refinery, the seventh largest in the country and the largest in the Midwest," the e-mail continued.
