LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police say they've arrested a man after he left a child alone in a car for over an hour.

It happened near the corner of S. 8th Street and W. Jefferson Street, on Wednesday, Aug. 12, just before 11 a.m.

Police say the mother of the child was at court, so she asked her boyfriend, 34-year-old James J. Sheets, to watch over the child. Instead, police say Sheets left the child alone in the vehicle, which was parked at a busy intersection for over an hour.

The child's mother was unaware of these circumstances, according to the arrest report.

"Had the child walked out of the vehicle, she easily could have gotten hit by another car," police say, adding that Sheets, "wantonly engaged in conduct that created a substantial danger of death or serious physical injury to the child."

Sheets was arrested and charged with first degree wanton endangerment.
