LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say a couple is doubling their money at local change machines by putting a $20 bill into the machine and getting both the bill and their change back.

"I couldn't believe it," said James Rogers, Manager of Laundry and Tan Connection. "It's the first time I ever seen something like that."

Rogers manages the Laundry and Tan Connection on Fourth and Cardinal. The business has cameras, but police say this couple still used the change machine to take home more than $1,500.

"They came and hit us on a Sunday, one of our busiest days," Rogers said. "That's the first time I've ever seen him shocked like that."

Rogers said the couple hit a machine that exchanges 20s for $5 bills. The theft was not discovered until hours later when the owner opened the machine.

"He was like 'Where's the money at? Where did it go?' you know what I'm saying? He's like, 'there's nothing nothing in here.'"

"I can tell you right now, I guarantee you it is not their first time doing it," said Det. Aaron Tinelli, with LMPD's 4th Division.

Det. Tinelli is working the case and hopes you can help him identify and find the suspects.

"I do think they are from the area," he said. "I do think that they are local individuals and that's why we're asking for your help to identify them."

The laundry connections on Poplar Level Road and Southgate Avenue were also hit; Det. Tinelli believes it could be the same suspects.

"We do feel that they do this on a nonstop basis, where ever they find one of these machines that will do it, they take advantage of it," explained Tinelli.

Police aren't sure how the suspects are able to do it, but from the video it looks like they've attached something to the $20 bill to pull it back out of the machine.

"But now they have updated all of the machines around so it's theft proof, whatever they do, so you can't do it no more," said Rogers.

The machine is theft proof now, but Rogers still wants to see the suspects behind bars.

"Once you do it once, you know they are going to hit other places," he said.

If you know who the people in the video are, you can call the police department's anonymous tip line at 574-LMPD.

Correction: This story previously listed the couple's total theft incorrectly as $15,000. The story has been corrected to $1,500.
