World War II veterans honored Saturday at Bowman Field

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - It's been 70 years since Japan surrendered, putting an end to World War II.

The Spirit of '45, a national grassroots effort, commemorates the anniversary every year with different events around the country.

Observances were held Saturday at Bowman Field in Louisville honoring World War II veterans.

The festival included vintage airplanes, restored military equipment and vehicles ,as well as encampments by WWII reenactors.

A former Navy veteran who attended MIT says events like this remind her of the atmosphere during war.

"It did change my life," Edith Pitzer said. "It had to change things, but everything had a purpose and I was glad in a small way - so far back from the lines - to do what I could do."

They'll hold ceremonies Sunday at national and state veterans cemeteries, laying wreaths at Zachary Taylor, Cave Hill and Radcliff.

Information for Sunday's activities can be found here.
