LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man is facing an assault charge after police say he used a box cutter to slash a victim, causing life-threatening injuries.

According to an arrest report, it happened Aug. 15 in the 2800 block of S. Fourth Street, near M Street.

Police say several witnesses reported seeing Gary Baer striking the victim with his hands before using a box cutter to slash the victim, causing deep lacerations to the victim's throat, chest, arm and hand.

According to the arrest report, when officers responded, Baer was still at the scene with the box cutter. Police say Baer spontaneously admitted that he assaulted the victim.

Police say the victim and the suspect had lived together for the past five years.

The victim was taken to University Hospital for treatment.

Baer was arraigned on Aug. 17. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.
