LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- Some service cuts went into effect Sunday, Aug. 16 after federal grant funding ended more than a year ago and TARC riders may now need some extra patience while waiting for their bus.

Some riders say they were late for work Monday morning because of the changes -- but TARC officials say there's been plenty of time to prepare. They proposed the changes in April and held several public meetings to gather input from riders.

“What we've gone and done is gone through very carefully and removed the runs that didn't have many people on them,” said Barry Barker, executive director of TARC.

Barker says he didn't want to cut any service but it was the only option. The move is saving the company more than a million dollars.

Kevin Johnson rides TARC every day. He used to wait 15 minutes for his bus, but now has to wait half an hour.

"I'll have to get up a little earlier so I'll probably be losing sleep, going to bed earlier, having to change a lot really,” said Johnson.

Johnson, who rides the 18 from Dixie Highway to his place of employment, says the change just added a lot of time to his work commute.

"It's about a 30 minute bus ride. Now it's about a 45 minute bus ride and wait,” said Johnson.

"I had an interview this morning I couldn't even get to because there was only one route,” added Rhonda Riggins.

Riggins says instead of cutting routes, TARC should be adding them.

"It sucks because you could be late for work or anything. I mean, people have jobs down here so what if you're late for work? That's costing your job,” she said.

Barker hopes he doesn't have to continue to make cuts but he’s unsure if he’ll have to.
