MSD and Louisville Water Company save millions by sharing resources

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Ten million dollars is how much money MSD and the Louisville Water Company say they have saved since the two companies began sharing resources.

The boards of both companies voted Tuesday to take their partnership one step further by forming a new combined operation called One Water.

If approved, they will be governed by a single board.

It could mean savings for customers on water and sewer rates.

"When we started this effort, we felt like savings possibilities were in the neighborhood of $15 to $25 million a year once the programs got fully underway. There's been nothing to indicate otherwise. It might be coming from different areas than we thought they originally would, but the overall savings seem to be there," said Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer.

By law, the change must still be approved by the Kentucky Attorney General's Office.
