ATF bomb-sniffing dogs training in Louisville

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Twelve bomb-sniffing dogs from across the country took over Louisville's Waterfront Park on Tuesday.

The dogs were part of an Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives training session.

A yellow Lab, Vegas, and her handler, are the ATF team that's sent to investigations across Kentucky and West Virginia.

They were called in to help find explosives stolen from a Norton Commons construction site in April.

"Vegas is capable of detecting approximately 19,000 different explosive odors," said Dan Neie, an ATF Special Agent K-9 Handler.

"She can detect commercial as well as military explosives, but in addition to that we train her to detect really small amounts so that she can find trace evidence."

That means the 2-year-old can detect something as small as a shell casing and even guns that have been recently fired.

ATF K-9 teams will continue training over the next few days at the KFC Yum! Center and Churchill Downs.
