VIDEO: Teachers, students surprised by $15,000 Amazon gift to Shepherdsville Elementary

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Amazon delivered a big surprise to a local elementary school Wednesday morning.

Fifteen-thousand dollars worth of school supplies was donated this morning at Shepherdsville Elementary. The gift was revealed at a special school assembly.

"We've got a rich history of giving back to our communities, and we've got a very large presence in Bullitt County – especially the Shepherdsville area – and we just wanted to be able to come out and give back to the teachers who take such good care of our students," said Al Ondreke, director of fulfillment at Amazon. "It's been an idea that we’ve done for a long, long time."

It was a complete surprise that not even the principal knew about.

"Wow. This has been an overwhelming morning," said Principal David Pate. "We are just so appreciative of Amazon for thinking of our teachers. Quite a surprise. I was asked to allow an assembly program to be held at 10 o’clock this morning. Was not told why – was just told to trust them, and I did. And it certainly paid off."

Christie Watson, an elementary school teacher, said she was overwhelmed.

"I can't believe this happened," she said. "I've had my classroom library for nine years now, and some of those books are very well-loved, so I thought we need some new copies of our most-loved book."

Amazon also gave school supplies to teachers at Nichols Elementary School.
